Personality Bio
It me---J.J. Hemingway----Your "Spokane Radio Pal." I'm a native of the Northwest--born in Seattle, growing up in West Seattle, Bellevue and Redmond. I'm a proud graduate of Redmond High School--same green and gold colors like Shadle Park.
For me--When it came to being on the radio---it was "Like Father---Like Son" My dad Jack Hemingway was an air personality in Seattle for many years, and by the time I was 3---when I got my first record player for Christmas, I knew radio was what I wanted to do. I used to get to go to the radio stations on Saturdays with my dad and go on the radio with him, and after having my own radio station at home---practicing very hard....just on tape.....I got my first job when I was a junior in high school at a little AM Oldies station in Seattle. Moved onto FM radio in Seattle, then in 1976, got an offer to go cross-country ---all the way to Savannah doing my first morning show. From there is was onto Winston-Salem/Greensboro, then to Greenville/Spartanburg, back to Seattle for a year, then to Dallas/Ft. Worth, Colorado Springs, Spokane (the first time), Great Falls, down to Columbus (Ga.), and since June of 1998 here at "Lite Rock Kiss 98.1."
Along the way I've even hosted a couple of TV shows along the way---a Comedy Show and a Hockey TV show.
Being in broadcasting is fun....nothing else I'd rather do. Besides hosting every Monday-Friday from 3-7 here on Lite Rock KISS 98.1, I have my own commercial production company called "Cascade Broadcast Services" a.k.a. "CBS-Spokane," and I do commercials and voiceovers for radio stations all over the U.S. from a recording studio in my home.
So, don't be too surprised if you're outside of Spokane and you hear me on an out of town radio station. I also get some assistance from talented folks like "Wise Guy" Rob Harder, Tammy Jo, Scott Shannon and others. Check out my website and find out more at: www.cbsspokane1.com.
I am so glad to call Spokane home. I was here in 1991-92, was away until May of 1998, and when I returned it once again felt like I had returned home. All you have to do is live in another area of the country, then you realized how blessed you are to live here in the Northwest. I'm a big fan of all types of music---except rap--yukko!!! I have a collection of around 8500 cd's, and I also collect movies and have around 1500 of those. A couple of my all-time favorites are "Sleepless In Seattle," "It's A Wonderful Life," "Serendipity," "Rainman," "Click," "The Family Man," "When Harry Met Sally," & Mel Gibson's "The Passion Of The Christ." When it comes to TV--don't watch as much as I used to, but I do watch alot of the Fox News Channel--I really like Bill O'Reilly, and "Hannity & Colmes," and I also love "Cold Case," "Law And Order," "NCIS," "Stargate: SG1,"(now just in reruns)--and I actually have all 10 seasons on DVD--that show I really am a fan of the show. I also enjoy "Stargate: Atlantis," and "Battlestar Galactica" Unfortunantly in it's final season---that's a bummer--it's a great show, superb storyline and a greast cast---with the final episodes apparently airing sometime in 2009. Not sure who makes the programming decisions at the Sci-Fi Channel...but I hate to wait so long to watch new episodes.
I love catching a Mariners game when I can make the trip over to Safeco Field, as well as the Sonics, Seahawks, Cougars, Huskies as well as our own Indians and Chiefs---and of course our own Gonzaga Bulldogs(if I can ever get tickets---that's hard to do)!!
I bowl 3 nights a week, averaging around 204 this year---it's probably those 4 bowling balls I own and take with me that help!! And like the "Wise Guys" enjoy playing golf. I love cars----I do drive a Silver Toyota Solara convertible with the tag RadioJJ---so if you see it--that's me!!!
Got a neat old car I bought in 2000---It's 1972 Volvo 1800es with just 72,000 original miles on it. It you see an unusual red car around Spokane---that might just be me behind the wheel.
It's an usual car Volvo only made this model for 2 years in 1972 & 1973, and mine is model #1778 out of the 8400 they built those two years in Sweden. And in 1972 Volvo only imported 1684 to the U.S. So, I do have kind of an unusual car. It's a 4-speed with overdrive and it is fun to drive! It gets lots of thumbs up when I drive it around Spokane.
Bit of a quirky car--but everything works perfectly---even the clock and surprisingly it does have Air Conditioning. You will see it from time to time at car shows around the Inland Northwest. I also have gotten into Volkswagens---I now own a yellow 1974 VW Karmann Ghia convertible, and one I just got in December of 2006---a 1978 Red Beetle Convertible. Yes--I do love convertibles.
I love new restaurants---especially ones that serve Mexican food and/or a great steak---and I'm not a bad cook myself---with my "claim to fame" being the creator of the "World's Greatest Mashed Potatoes."
I even enjoy shopping---and with a 21 year old daughter---you gotta love shopping. Her name's Breanna and she lives in the Seattle area--works at Starbucks, and is attending Bible College. She's my #1 girl. I live in the North part of Spokane, and attend Life Center--the one by Spokane Falls Community College--Pastor Joe rocks!!
That's the "J.J. Story" and I'm stickin' to it. Thanks for being a member of our "Lite Rock Kiss 98.1" Listening Family. And most of all---thanks for letting me be a part of your afternoon from 3-7. As well as Saturdays mid-day from 9am-3pm.
E-mail me when you get a chance and let me know you're listening.
